Liang Shaoji

Born in 1945 in Shanghai and studied at the ‘Varbanov’ Institute of Tapestry at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Art in Hangzhou, China. His early work consisted of serenely abstract hangings and installations made from textiles, often including bamboo as well. They made him a well-known figure in international exhibitions of arts and crafts.

Having used industrial silk for his textile works, started experimenting in 1988 making his ‘own silk’. Breading silkworms and using them as a living component within his work, become the starting point of a whole new oeuvre.

Since then with his ‘Nature series’, named as Helmets, Chains and Candle followed by a number and a date he has combined weaving and sculpture, biology, bio-ecology, action, video and performance.

Statement

" When I came back to the roots of textile,I found a cocoon is exactly a body of knitting life, a sense of stillness and emptiness, and of a certain blurriness that is inherent in the quality of silk. So, I started using actual silkworms in my work ‘Nature series’ from 1989 in the interaction of nature.”
