2013 Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art has been preceded by over two years of preparations. At present, preparations for all aspects of the exhibition are already entering their final stages. On the 31st of July, the Triennial’s academic committee staged a countdown assembly at the Zhejiang Art Museum. The assembly was chaired by the director of both the Triennial of Fiber Art and the Zhejiang Art Museum, Ma Fenghui. The academic committee members attending the assembly included principal of the China Academy of Art (CAA) Xu Jiang; the artistic director and lead curator of the Triennial of Fiber Art Shi Hui; the Triennial’s associate curator Assadour Marakov; assistant to the director of the China Silk Museum Cai Qin; along with representatives of the CAA, Zhejiang Art Museum and China Silk Museum. Together, these individuals compose the various projects divisions of the Triennial, reporting on their progress preparing for different aspects of the exhibition. Having received reports from each division, the assembled parties set about orchestrating the final preparations for the exhibition’s opening.
During the assembly, the Triennial’s academic committee provided positive feedback on all aspects of preparations for the exhibition. During the assembly, principal Xu Jiang stated the general significance of the exhibition as threefold: firstly, the exhibition will present an important expression of the present state of contemporary art; at the same time reflecting the academic and creative revival of Hangzhou, the historic home of silk; helping Zhejiang province to become a leading centre for textiles production and the apparel industry; finally, organizing the Triennial will also allow various creative organizational units to form, cracking certain negative political conventions and creating a brand new, distinctive exhibitions platform, effecting a transition away from mere institutionalization and developing beneficial structures.
