Francois Daireaux, France; Kim Soonim, Korea; Rakhi Peswani, India and Verjinia Markarova, Bulgaria will be taking up their residencies in Hanzghou during June and July. The Triennial’s Organising Committee provides the raw materials, assistants and accommodation and transport. It is anticipated that these artists will produce works connected directly with the Hangzhou’s culture and history.
During June, Francois Daireaux will begin working with four tonnes of glass fiber resin, along with five hundred pairs of socks, to create a work specific for the Triennial. At the beginning of July, Kim Soonim will acquire materials from nearby Suzhou and then travel to Hangzhou to begin producing her new work.
Similarly, Lucy and Jorge Orta will use Chinese damask silk to produce a new work for the Triennial. The artists are at present designing patterns for the garments, incorporating Chinese elements and contemporary symbolism that also references materials from the historic Jiangnan region.
